A Genetic Test to Assess Your Risk of Cellulite

September 28, 2010

With the advances in today’s technology, new discoveries are being made almost every day. One of the newest discoveries is that your risk for moderate to severe cellulite can be genetic. Most professionals agree that cellulite appears in areas of the skin where the fat layer that is closest to the skin is pushing through the connective tissue. With this in mind it is also accepted that cellulite is not a problem that results from excessive fat, but that it is a skin disorder, which means obese, overweight, and skinny people can all suffer from cellulite.

DermaGenoma, a company that delivers the newest genetic discoveries to doctors and patients alike, has discovered that there is a genetic link for people who suffer from moderate to severe cellulite. Even though the genes aren’t done being characterized there is still plenty of evidence that points to this conclusion. The strongest evidence is found on chromosome 17, which is the angiotensin l-converting enzyme, also known as ACE.

The CelluliteDX Genetic Test monitors chromosome 17 for any ACE activity, but also for any production of angiotensin II. The test is designed to report if the ACE gene is present or its absence in a specific person. According to a study that has been done if the test reports the ACE gene is present that person has around a 70% chance of suffering from cellulite, while people who tested negative only have a 50% chance of not suffering from unsightly cellulite.

Even though there are not very many cellulite treatments proven to work available on the market, helping to identify people at risk for moderate to severe cellulite can allow cellulite treatments to begin sooner rather than later. This is important because once cellulite appears it is very hard to reverse, but making changes early on in life can hopefully stop cellulite or even delay it from appearing.

DermaGenoma is also studying potential therapies that can be used early on to treat cellulite based on the findings of the genetic markers for cellulite. So by taking the CelluliteDX Genetic Test your doctor can also help you determine which therapies are going to be right for you based on your genetic markers.
